AIDAN SMITH & HIS INDULGENT FRIENDS
PHONE ME IF YOU’RE BORED
Release date: 6th of December
Aidan Smith got his multi-instrumental training in piano lessons, Salford Music Centre brass and swing bands, teenage campfire jams and drumming on books with pens whilst meant to be doing his homework.
He has made two records on a blue 4-track tape machine for Manchester’s revered Twisted Nerve Records, before releasing two full-length records on Analogue Catalogue, and Humble Soul. During this period he also hibernated, worked in public libraries and sound tracked a number of short-films. Smith also co-wrote a ‘super-8 musical film’ “It’s Nick’s Birthday” which also included his first ever-acting role…staring as a piece of pepperoni.
To date, there have been support slots with Badly Drawn Boy, and Brendan Benson amongst others, and tours with I Am Kloot, Turin Breaks, and King Creosote. In recent times, never one to rest on his laurels Smith has co-wrote and acted in a one-off sold-out stage musical at Manchester’s Green Room Theatre and performed accordion, bass and keyboards for various bands. He also produced and rhymed on rap album ‘Other People’s Money’ by Public Sector, a crew his started with three friends from the Manchester Music Scene.
All the while though Smith was privately working on his previously lo-fi recording techniques and flighty, surrealistic song-writing. ‘Phone Me If You’re Bored’ out on Interbang Records on the 6th ofDecember sees his best and most mature work yet. Backed by His Indulgent Friends he has crafted a pop album of epic dynamic range.
The songs on this album are culled from over forty recordings made recently with and without the band and feature songs from diverse narrative points of view. A princess elopes with a song-writer, a murdered ghost haunts his former lover, a Gambler reviews his life and marriage
. All the while Smithcelebrates the beauty of the imagination and the poetry in the apparently mundane.
This recent concentration coincides with Smith’s decision to pay for a haircut for the first time in eleven years. Coincidence? One doesn’t think so…
